Health effects

Aluminum is the third most abundant element in the Earth's crust, and exposure through food, antacids, antiperspirants, and cookware vastly exceeds typical drinking-water intake. At the EPA secondary range, aluminum is regulated as a cosmetic concern: it causes water discoloration, post-treatment turbidity, and deposition in distribution pipes.

The contested health question is whether long-term aluminum exposure contributes to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. Several older epidemiological studies found an association between drinking-water aluminum and dementia rates, but the link has not been conclusively replicated and most current public-health authorities consider the evidence inconclusive. WHO and EPA have both reviewed it and chose not to set a health-based MCL.

The one population that should take aluminum exposure seriously is dialysis patients. Their kidneys cannot excrete absorbed aluminum, and high aluminum in dialysis water has historically caused dialysis encephalopathy. Dialysis centers use specially purified water as a result.

Where it comes from

How it gets into your water

The largest source of aluminum in city water is the treatment process itself. Most utilities add aluminum sulfate (alum) as a coagulant to clump fine particles together so they can be filtered out. The coagulant is then mostly removed, but trace aluminum residue carries through to the tap. Levels are usually well within the SMCL range, but poorly-operated plants can deliver noticeably higher amounts.

In well water, aluminum comes from the natural dissolution of aluminum-containing minerals, especially in acidic groundwater. Acid rain and acid mine drainage can mobilize aluminum from soil and bedrock that would otherwise stay locked up. Industrial sources include aluminum smelting and certain manufacturing waste streams.

Is it in your water?

Aluminum at SMCL levels is invisible and tasteless, so the only reliable way to know is a lab test. On city water, the utility may or may not report aluminum in the annual CCR. Some include it as part of an extended inorganics panel, others do not. If yours is silent on aluminum and you use alum coagulation (most surface-water utilities do), assume trace aluminum is present at low levels.

Visible signs of high aluminum include cloudy or whitish water, white film inside the kettle that does not behave like calcium scale, and gray deposits in toilet tanks. These are usually associated with plant upsets or end-of-line distribution issues rather than chronic conditions.

The aluminum that carries through from coagulation is typically present as fine particles or weakly bound to organic matter, both of which the AquaOx's carbon and Filter-AG stages catch.
