What is a whole house water filter?

A whole house water filter is a filtration system installed at your home's main water line that treats every drop of water entering your home, including kitchen taps, showers, laundry, refrigerator, dishwasher, and outdoor spigots. Unlike under-sink or pitcher filters that only treat water at one point, a whole house system protects every fixture and appliance simultaneously.

AquaOx whole house water filters filter more than 300 known contaminants, including chlorine, chloramines, lead, mercury, arsenic, hydrogen sulfide ("rotten egg" smell), iron, sediment, herbicides, pesticides, industrial solvents, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The system works on both city and well water.

How does a whole house water filter work?

Water entering your home passes through a multi-stage filtration tank. Each AquaOx tank contains six premium filtration media in a specific order: pre-sediment, KDF 85, Garnet, Centaur Catalytic Adsorptive Carbon, Activated Coconut Shell Carbon, and Filter-AG. Each stage targets a different category of contaminant. The system automatically backwashes every three days to refresh the media, so there's no manual maintenance.

How long do whole house water filters last?

AquaOx filter media is rated for 10+ years. Many AquaOx systems installed 15+ years ago are still running strong today. Self-backwashing keeps the media performing without intervention, which is why a single AquaOx system is genuinely a "buy once" purchase for most homeowners, compared to carbon-only systems that typically need replacement every 5 years.

Does a whole house water filter filter fluoride?

The AquaOx reduces fluoride — up to about 40% in independent lab testing — but it is not designed to take it all the way to zero. If you want fully fluoride-free drinking water, pair The AquaOx with a reverse osmosis (RO) filter at the kitchen sink, where you draw drinking water. The whole-house system handles taste, smell, chlorine, and heavy metals at every tap; the RO finishes the job on fluoride at the tap you actually drink from. See the AquaOx RO Kitchen Sink →

Is a whole house water filter worth it?

For most homeowners, yes, but specifically when you're concerned about contaminants that affect more than just drinking water. Chlorine in shower water can irritate skin and lungs. Hard-water residue damages appliances. Heavy metals leach from old plumbing throughout your home, not just at the kitchen sink. A whole house system is the only category of filter that addresses your entire water supply, not just one tap.

Why AquaOx

Ultimate purity. Ultimate protection.

The difference is inside. AquaOx packs more premium filtration media into a single tank than any other system on the market, so it filters more contaminants and lasts longer.

  • Ultimate purity

6 layers of premium filtration media

KDF 85 · Garnet · Centaur Catalytic Carbon · Activated Coconut Shell Carbon · Filter-AG. 3× the surface contact time of competitor systems.

  • Patented technology

    Vortech distribution plates

Double-Vortech design eliminates gravel beds, increases media efficiency, and significantly reduces water use during regeneration cycles.

  • Built to last

Lasts 2× longer than carbon competitors

Filter media rated for 10+ years vs. the ~5-year carbon-only systems most competitors sell. In practice, many AquaOx systems we installed 15+ years ago are still running strong.

Not ready for whole-house?

Start with the AquaOx RO Kitchen Sink

A 5-stage reverse osmosis filter at the kitchen sink. Filters 99% of contaminants, including fluoride. Installs in under an hour. Great as a starter system.

Already buying an AquaOx? Add the RO for complete coverage. Your whole-house system handles taste, chlorine, heavy metals, and reduces fluoride; the RO takes fluoride all the way to zero at the tap you drink from.

Common questions

What does AquaOx filter from my water?

Chlorine, chloramines, lead, mercury, arsenic, iron, sediment, herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, industrial byproducts. Over 300 contaminants in total. It also reduces fluoride — up to about 40% in independent lab testing — though for fully fluoride-free drinking water we recommend pairing it with our under-sink RO at the kitchen tap.

Do I still need an under-sink RO for drinking water?

It depends on what you want at the kitchen tap. The AquaOx filters 300+ contaminants whole-house, great for showering, laundry, dishes, and drinking. It also reduces fluoride (up to about 40% in independent lab testing), but if you want it fully removed, we recommend pairing AquaOx with our under-sink reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap — RO is the best at-home way to take fluoride all the way down.

What size do I need: Regular or XL?

The standard AquaOx is great for most homes up to 4 bathrooms. For larger homes, choose the XL. That said, the XL has the most filter media of any system on the market. If you want maximum protection and the longest possible service life regardless of home size, the XL is the move.

Do I also need a water softener?

AquaOx is a purifier. It filters contaminants but leaves healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium in your water. If you have hard water (common with well water and in much of the Southwest), you may still want a softener to prevent scale on fixtures, water heaters, and tankless heaters. The AquaOx goes first, the softener after. Not sure if your water is hard? Send us your water report and we will tell you.

Where do I install it?

Wherever your main water line enters your home, most commonly the garage. It can also go in a basement, utility room, or even buried in a crawl space (your plumber digs out a level pad). In warm, non-freezing climates like Florida, outside is fine too. Do not install outside in any climate where water can freeze.

How long does installation take?

A licensed plumber typically installs The AquaOx in 2–4 hours. AquaOx is direct-to-consumer: any licensed plumber can do it. There is no proprietary tooling or certified installer required. The install is three connections: inlet, outlet, and a small drain line.

Will this work for well water?

Yes. AquaOx is built for both city and well water. If you have specific concerns (heavy iron, hydrogen sulfide / rotten egg smell, bacteria), we offer specialty systems and add-ons. Take the quiz or call us at (803) 369-6956.

Will it protect my tankless water heater?

Yes, and we recommend it. Chlorine and chloramines degrade tankless heat exchangers over time; AquaOx filters them. If your water is also hard, pair AquaOx with a softener: tankless manufacturers will void warranties on units that scale up from hard water.

How long does the filter media last?

AquaOx filter media is rated for 10+ years. In practice, many AquaOx systems we installed 15+ years ago are still running strong. The system self-backwashes every 3 days to keep media performing, no manual maintenance required.

What's the warranty?

10-year parts & labor warranty on every AquaOx system. We stand behind every system we ship.
