What it does to you
Health effects
The cardiovascular system is the primary target for chronic barium exposure. Long-term consumption above the MCL is associated with elevated blood pressure and, at higher doses, cardiac arrhythmias. Soluble barium salts can interfere with normal heart muscle electrical conduction by blocking potassium channels.
The kidneys are also affected by long-term barium exposure, with measurable changes in renal function in animal studies at sustained doses above the EPA limit. People with pre-existing kidney disease or hypertension are more sensitive to barium effects.
Acute high-dose barium poisoning causes severe muscle weakness, paralysis, and cardiac arrest, but those concentrations are essentially never seen in regulated tap water. The MCL of 2 mg/L is set well below the threshold for any acute effect.
Where it comes from
How it gets into your water
Barium enters drinking water primarily through natural geological dissolution. Barium-bearing minerals like barite (barium sulfate) and witherite (barium carbonate) occur in sedimentary rock across much of the central and eastern United States, and groundwater moving through these formations picks up dissolved barium.
Industrial sources include discharge from oil and gas drilling (barite is a major component of drilling mud), metal refining, paint and pigment manufacturing, glass production, and brick and ceramic plants.
Most municipal utilities with high source-water barium use ion exchange, lime softening, or reverse osmosis at the treatment plant to bring finished water below the 2 mg/L MCL.

Is it in your water?
Barium is included in the standard inorganic package every utility tests and reports on their Consumer Confidence Report. Most municipal supplies run well below the 2 mg/L MCL.
Private well owners across the central US, particularly in parts of Illinois, Iowa, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, have higher background barium risk from local geology. If your well is in a barium-rich region or near oil-and-gas drilling activity, request a barium test as part of your inorganic panel.
The fix
How AquaOx filters it
AquaOx's KDF-55 copper-zinc media reduces barium through redox chemistry, with the alloy converting soluble barium ions into insoluble forms that get trapped in the filter bed. The activated carbon stages add adsorption capacity for residual barium compounds.
