What it does to you

Health effects

E. coli infection from contaminated drinking water typically causes acute gastrointestinal illness within one to ten days of exposure. Symptoms include severe abdominal cramps, watery or bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and low-grade fever. Most healthy adults recover in five to seven days without treatment.

The Shiga-toxin-producing strain O157:H7 is the dangerous one. It can progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a form of acute kidney failure that is fatal in roughly 3 to 5 percent of cases and disproportionately kills children under five. The 1993 Walkerton, Ontario outbreak from a contaminated well killed seven people and sickened more than 2,300.

Total coliforms are not pathogens themselves. The EPA regulates them because they are easy to test for and their presence signals that the barriers protecting your water supply have been breached, meaning pathogens could also be getting through.

Where it comes from

How it gets into your water

E. coli lives in the intestines of warm-blooded animals, including humans. It enters drinking water through fecal contamination: septic system failures bleeding into nearby wells, livestock or wildlife waste washing into surface water intakes after heavy rain, agricultural runoff, and cross-connections between sewer and water lines.

Private wells are the most common vector. Shallow wells, dug wells, and wells with damaged casings or missing sanitary seals are especially vulnerable. Spring snowmelt and heavy storms are peak risk windows because surface contamination has the most opportunity to migrate into groundwater.

Municipal systems can also fail. Main breaks, pressure loss events, and treatment plant upsets create conditions where coliforms slip into the distribution network.

Is it in your water?

Under the EPA Revised Total Coliform Rule (RTCR), every municipal utility tests for total coliforms on a regular schedule and reports detections to the public. A single E. coli detection legally requires the utility to issue a boil-water advisory and notify customers within 24 hours.

Private wells are not federally regulated. The CDC and EPA recommend testing your well for total coliforms and E. coli at least once a year, and immediately after any flooding, well repair, or septic work. Inexpensive test kits are available through state health departments and certified labs.

If your tap water has ever caused unexplained GI illness in your household, especially shortly after a heavy rainfall, coliform testing should be the first thing you do.

The fix

How AquaOx filters it

The standard AquaOx whole-house system uses chemical filtration (KDF, catalytic carbon, coconut shell carbon, and sediment stages) to filter chlorine, metals, and organic contaminants. KDF has some bacteriostatic effect that inhibits bacterial colonization inside the filter bed, but it is not a disinfection technology. Carbon and sediment filtration alone do not reliably kill or filter bacteria like E. coli.

For microbial contamination, AquaOx pairs the whole-house system with a Viqua UV sterilizer installed downstream of the filtration stages. UV light at 254 nm damages bacterial DNA and inactivates E. coli, coliforms, viruses, and protozoa as water passes through the chamber. This is the standard configuration for well-water homes and is what we recommend whenever coliform testing comes back positive.

UV is highly effective but it requires clean water to work. The AquaOx sediment and carbon stages filter the turbidity and organics that would otherwise shield microbes from the UV dose, which is why the two systems work best as a pair rather than in isolation.
