What it does to you

Health effects

Toxaphene is classified by the EPA as a likely human carcinogen, with animal studies showing liver tumors at chronic exposure. The IARC classifies it as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B).

The nervous system, liver, and kidneys are the documented target organs. Acute exposure causes neurological symptoms including tremors and seizures because toxaphene disrupts GABA receptor function in the brain. Chronic exposure damages the liver and kidneys.

Toxaphene bioaccumulates in fat tissue and biomagnifies up aquatic food chains, which is why state fish-consumption advisories still exist for some lakes and rivers decades after the ban. Subsistence anglers in contaminated watersheds face the highest exposure.

Where it comes from

How it gets into your water

Toxaphene was the most heavily used insecticide in the US during the 1970s, with peak applications on cotton across the Southeast, Texas, and California. The EPA banned it in 1990, but the compound is extremely persistent: half-lives in soil and sediment span decades.

Legacy contamination persists in former cotton-growing regions and downstream sediments. The compound slowly volatilizes and re-deposits, which is how it ended up in Arctic wildlife thousands of miles from any application site. Drinking water contamination is rare but documented near contaminated sediments and former application areas.
